As the buses departed from Hartford’s Camp Courant (HCC) for the final time in our 2014 Camp season, hundreds of Hartford’s children returned to their neighborhoods better equipped for the upcoming school year. In our historic 120th year, we served an average of 600 campers per day and around 1,000 total campers throughout the six-week season. In addition to a variety of youth development programs, the capital city’s children were exposed to recreational activities, nutritious food offerings, and a whole lot of summer fun. NEW to HCC this year was the Garmany Garden, which was created in partnership with funding from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and with the assistance of KNOX Parks. Having a garden on campus gave campers hands-on experience with the process of planting, growing and harvesting their own vegetables.
Also new to HCC in 2014 were the weekly ‘BrainSTEM’ workshops—a series of activities designed to provide campers with fun, interactive, and engaging activities with a focus on S.T.E.M. (Science Technology Engineering Math) education and youth development. This program was made possible through partnerships with LEGO, the Connecticut Science Center, and divisions of United Technologies.
Health and safety were also topics of focus this season. The Mobile CPR Training Unit sponsored by Travelers visited Camp and provided some CPR training and practice to older campers. In addition, each camper received a free vision screening in partnership with the Lions Club of Farmington and campers once again received free dental screenings.
Since 1894, it has been the mission of Hartford’s Camp Courant to provide a FREE summer sanctuary, where children can develop positive relationships, learn, and most importantly, have fun. The 2014 Camp season was no different, as the organization continued its efforts to provide important youth development initiatives with the goal of preventing summer learning loss and enabling Hartford’s children to be healthy and active.
The 2014 season will culminate in our 15th annual Buddy Bash—a superhero themed fundraiser, which will be held at Camp on September 19, 2014. This ‘out-of-this-world’ event will bring together our donors, supporters, partners and friends in celebration of our 120th Anniversary and to raise money to send Hartford’s kids to Camp.
